‘It’s not just about capturing the mood of a place; it’s about catching the very essence of its soul’ ~ Julia Entwistle
An Introduction to me
I am a Lancashire based artist currently living in Horwich. I have lived in Lancashire for around 20 years and have fallen in love with the West Pennine Moors and the surrounding areas.
In 2004 I graduated from Blackburn college gaining a BA (hons) degree in fine art. I have continued my art for the last 15 years, and have since obtained a studio practice in Horwich, which is located amidst the West Pennine Moors.
I love being in the landscape and the feeling it gives me. This feeling affects how I paint, which then translates into my paintings.
The process of how I paint is to start with either a sketchbook or blank canvas. If it is sketching, I just tend to use charcoal or maybe water colours. Once I have got an initial image down, I can then translate it onto a canvas. When starting on canvas I will begin with an acrylic wash to create an outline.
My main medium of choice is acrylics, because I like the fluidity of how they work and blend well with other mediums, such as varnish. The over layering of thin glazing whilst using a varnish, gives an extra body and dimension to my paintings creating an overall effect of translucency and depth.
Due to the speed at which acrylics can dry, it allows me instant gratification, and freedom of movement. Thus, enabling me to get my vision on to the surface quickly, before the image disappears out of my head.
I love the results of this process, because even to this day my creations can always surprise me!
